One Punch Man Free-To-Play Multiplayer Game Announced

Crunchyroll Games has announced a new upcoming game based on One Punch Man, the webcomic-turned-manga-turned-anime that began gaining major recognition in 2015. But One Punch Man: World isn’t the series’ first foray into the gaming world, and previous games in the franchise haven’t always been successful. Still, based on the trailer, One Punch Man: World might looks to be quite loyal to the source material.

Crunchyroll senior VP of emerging business and Crunchyroll Games general manager Terry Li echoed this sentiment, calling the game “the most ambitious Crunchyroll Games title to date,” and describing the game as “an immersive online action game that transports players into the universe of One-Punch Man.”

“The game, developed by Perfect World, brings iconic characters and abilities to life with premiere production values that we are excited to unleash on anime fans and gamers,” Li added.

One Punch Man: World sees the series’ titular bald superhero (who goes by Saitama when not donning his spandex) explore familiar locales from the anime and manga, teaming up with his student/sidekick Genos and other popular characters from the series to investigate Z-City, solve mysteries, and punch things really hard in the name of justice. The Hero Association (and the world at large) are spread thin and struggling after increasing monster attacks, but given Saitama’s incredible strength, he’s gotten a bit bored of things. But the appearance of a unique new challenger may be enough to get him–and the rest of his heroic friends–invested in the fight.

The game appears somewhat similar to the Persona series at first glance, but the multiplayer aspect (and characters’ larger-than-life superpowers) make it stand out from the crowd. Players can meet up with friends in the Hero Association hub and take on missions or complete raids together, unlocking different heroes as they progress and play out versions of popular scenes from the anime. In addition to being free, the multiplayer action game also allows for both cross-platform play and cross-progression, allowing players to pick up where they left off no matter what kind of device they happen to be using.

CrunchyRoll has confirmed that One Punch Man: World will be available for iOS/Android mobile devices and PC. Although no release date has been announced, players can now pre-register on the official One Punch Man: World website.
